MoMA

If I could only visit one art gallery, this would be it. We spent the day at the Museum of Modern Art and were blown away by the experience. Unlike the larger galleries, the major works at the MoMA are spread over two manageable floors. The fifth floor houses an amazing selection of modern art hung one next to the other. On the wall behind Cézanne’s, ‘The Bather’ is Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and behind that is Edvard Munch’s iconic ‘The Scream’. In the surrounding rooms are too many other icons to mention. The collection is held together by an audio tour explaining their relevance. We learnt of Picasso’s fascination with sex, over and over again. Similarly, we learnt of Van Gogh’s fascination with death and Warhol’s fascination with the lives of others. On the floor below, we learnt of Pollock’s struggles with existentialism and his contemporary’s struggles with reality.  In the middle of our visit, we stopped for lunch at the gallery’s restaurant, ‘the Modern’, to take a breath and re-fuel. While there, without the aid of the audio guide, we learnt of the fundamental importance of good food and wine to an art gallery experience.
